This interview was recorded on April 19th, 2022 at the home of Norma Lewis Randolph in Freehold. Norma was born in 1934, and has been a resident of Freehold her entire life. She discusses the family that owned her great-grandmother as a slave, the Great Migration, segregation and discrimination, and grassroots community efforts to facilitate voting mid-20th century. She attended the segregated Court Street school, and later Freehold High School, where she was the first to integrate the Majorettes and marched with them for three years. She describes the determination of the black community to withstand and overcome the racism they endured up through the better part of the 20th century, which she often described as a “hard row to hoe.” Norma passed away three months after this interview took place at the age of 88. Many well-respected locals attended her funeral. She was a brilliant storyteller with a strong spirit and an exceptional ability to express love to those around her.
